Your First Nail Appointment: What to Expect
A first nail appointment takes 30 to 90 minutes depending on the service. You'll choose a color, have your nails shaped and cuticles tidied, then have polish, gel, dip or acrylic applied. Booking ahead is wise for a first visit; walk-ins are usually accommodated on weekday mornings.
What should you book first?
If you've never had your nails done, start with a basic manicure or a shellac gel manicure. Both are short, low-commitment and let you see how you feel about having your hands worked on before spending ninety minutes on a full acrylic set.
If your goal is specifically length, say so and we'll talk about acrylic — but there's no harm in a manicure first to get comfortable.
How long will it take?
| Service | Time in the chair |
|---|---|
| Basic manicure | 20 min (+ drying) |
| Manicure with shellac gel | 25 min |
| Classic pedicure | 25 min |
| Deluxe pedicure | 50 min |
| Venus Signature pedicure | 60 min |
| Dipping powder | 60 min |
| Acrylic full set | 60 min |
| Acrylic fill | 45 min |
The two hygiene questions you should ask
Ask any nail salon two things: how the pedicure bowls are cleaned between clients, and whether files and buffers are single-use. The right answers are “disinfected with an EPA-registered hospital-grade disinfectant after every client” and “yes, single-use.” A good salon answers without hesitation. Hesitation is your answer.
You can also ask to see implements come out of a sealed pouch or a disinfectant solution. Nobody reputable minds being asked. In Kentucky, salons and technicians are licensed by the Kentucky Board of Cosmetology and licenses must be displayed — you're entitled to look.
What to bring and what to say
- A photo if you have a look in mind. Worth more than any amount of describing.
- Your shape preference — square, squoval, round, oval, almond. If you don't know, say so and we'll suggest what suits your nail bed.
- Any allergies or skin conditions, plus whether you are pregnant or diabetic. Both change how we work — a diabetic pedicure skips cuticle trimming and aggressive callus work — and neither stops us doing the service.
- What your job allows. Healthcare, food service and some manufacturing roles restrict nail length. Tell us and we'll build within it.
- How long you've got. If you have a hard stop in 45 minutes, that's genuinely useful to know before we start.
Tipping, payment and etiquette
Tipping is customary in US nail salons; 15–20% is the usual range, and cash is appreciated because it goes straight to your technician. Nobody will be rude to you if you don't — but it's the norm, and worth knowing in advance rather than being caught out at the counter.
A few other things nobody mentions: it's fine to sit quietly and not make conversation. It's fine to ask for a color change before the second coat goes on, and much less fine after. It's fine to say a shape isn't right while it's being filed — that's the moment to fix it. And if something isn't what you wanted at the end, say so then rather than after you've left; almost everything is fixable in the chair.
